6. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT – Use the following items of personal protective

7. PREPARATION AND RECOVERY CONTROLS – The following must be in place before
work starts. |
|
|
|
|
|
Receptacles for welding rods and used stubs have been provided. |
|
|
Check flashback arrestor and non-return valve are fitted correctly before opening gas supply and
lighting the flame. |
|
|
Gas testing is to be carried out in hazardous areas immediately before start of Hot Work for
each shift. |
|
|
Flammable and combustible material and passive fire protection coating is to be removed from
work surface and surrounding area. |
|
|
Drains and gullies in the immediate work area are to be checked clear of all combustible material
and protected with fire blankets (wetted if necessary). |
|
|
Screens are to be erected to protect passing personnel. |
|
|
Fire and smoke detectors are to be inhibited for given worksite. |
|
|
Gas cylinders are to be secured in upright position in well-ventilated area and protected from
direct heat. Bottle keys to be secured local to Gas Regulators. |
|
|
Barriers and signs are to be erected. Barriers are to be removed as soon as practically possible.

Check that extraction/ventilation system is operational. If ventilation system fails personnel must
stop work and leave the confined space immediately. |

System to be isolated, de-pressurised and Isolation Certificate in place. |

Wherever possible, cables and hoses to be kept to minimum lengths, run through mouseholes,
secured at regular intervals and kept away from ladders, walkways and wet areas. Where not
possible protective covers are to be fitted and warning notices posted. |

Tripping hazard to be mechanically removed or bridged and permanently marked. |
|
|
Fire Watcher to be appointed. |
|
|
Fire blanket to be provided. |
|
|
Check access and escape routes are clear at all times or alternative routes marked and the
workforce informed. |
|
|
Check at the worksite that portable fire extinguisher of the correct type is available. |
|
|
Check the deluge system is operational and the means of manual initiation known and
understood by all members of the work party. |
|
|
Check that a dedicated fire hose, pressurised to the nozzle is available. Frost precautions are to
be taken where appropriate. |
|
|
|
|
|

8. EXECUTION CONTROLS – The following must be observed during the work. |
|
|
|
|
|
When gas welding or cutting in a vessel, torches are to be removed when not in use. |
|
|
Check an authorised igniter is available to light torch |
|
|
PICWS/Firewatcher to check other side of wall/work area. Before starting or re-starting
and during execution of work. |
|
|
Check that all air intakes are protected from gas/fumes/air borne particles etc. |
|
|
Only appropriately designed transportation devices are to be used for the movement of gas
cylinders round the platform/plant. |
|
|
During work breaks, gas cylinder and hose valves to be closed and hoses de-pressurised. Gas
cylinders to be returned to specified area when empty. |
|
|
Hot Work Permit and Gas Test Certificate to be on-site whenever work is underway. |
|
|
Flammable substances not to be used within 1 metre of hot surfaces. |
|
|
Hoses are not to be kinked during operation. |
|
|
Portable Gas Detector to be at worksite at all times. |
|
|
|
